Kota Gede, which is often called Sargede is located about five kilometers southeast of Yogyakarta, Kotagede is a neat little town, which was once the seat of the mighty Mataram Empire. Since the 1930s, Kotagede has become famous for being the center of the Yogya silverwork industry. There are a number of workshops where visitors are welcome to watch silver being transformed into beautiful works of art known as "Yogya Silver". Kotagede is easily reached by "andong", the four-wheeled horse-drawn cart, by taxi, bus, or car.

Legend and myth surround much of the information available for the time the palace was intact, and only the Royal Graveyard (precursor to Imogiri) and a few small sections of wall of the palace remain.

In the expansion of the city of Yogyakarta in the late twentieth century, Kota Gede is merely a suburb within the city. At the time of Indonesian independence in the 1940s and after considerable publicity was given to the silver workers within this locality.

The Royal Graveyard holds important graves that trace connections of Mataram with earlier kingdoms, and the placement of the graves within the covered area of the graveyard can be considered as a physical representation of ’silsilah’ or geneaology of the rulers and their progenitors. It is guarded and maintained by Juru Kunci who are employed by the two palaces of Yogyakarta and Surakarta.
In that cemetery complex one can still visit the cemetery of the Mataram kings like Sutowijoyo or Ngabei Loring Pasar, the founder of Mataram Kingdom, who was then called Panembahan Senopati. There is also the unique tomb of Ki Ageng Mangir. He was Panembahan Senopati son in law and also Panembahan Senopati enemy. His dead body was buried half inside of the special area for kings and Panembahan Senopati families, and a half of his body was buried outside of the complex. There is a stone called " Watu Gilang ", a stone on which Panembahan Senopati smashed the Ki Ageng Mangir head to dead.

Kotagede is a place of various Indonesian food. One famous is 'sate karang'. When you heard sate karang maybe you will ask ''what is karang'' Karang isn't the name of the food's ingredient but Karang is one of placename of Kotagede. It's known as sate karang because its located at Karang field. If you confused to find it just ask the local. They will give you the direction.

This satay existing since 1930. The seller still sold around Kotagede. But since 1980, they opened the stall at Karang Field. And until now have been managed to the second generation.

Basicly this satay similar to the others satay, used peanut sauce. But difference with other satay that usually use chicken or goat but here they used beef. Beef satay is also delicious when served with rice cake. Usually javanese people called it lontong. But the difference, this rice cake mixed with vegetable sauce that tastes delicious. All of the three will produce nice blend from sweet and savory. Sweet taste comes from satay and peanut sauce while savory comes from vegetable soup. If you start to bite the meat will not hard because it had been burned to mature.
